With small and fast Wi-Fi device usage on the rise. More business travelers are quickly forgeting the vunerability they have to serious security threats while in the public. The following article by Tanya Mohn offers some insight of what some of the leading security companies have to say.

With small and fast laptops, powerful smartphones, tablets and readily available Wi-Fi, working on the road — on planes, in airports and hotel rooms — has never been easier. But security experts say these conveniences also make the offices away from home more vulnerable to serious security threats.

Dilip Vishwanat for The New York Times

Bryndon Bay, a Missouri businessman, uses his iPad or iPhone instead of a laptop when he travels.

“It’s a huge, huge issue for companies and employees and growing more each day,” said Bruce McIndoe, president of iJET Intelligent Risk Systems, a travel risk management company. “It’s a ripe environment for hackers and criminals.”

A report released last week by the Symantec Corporation, a security software provider, and the Ponemon Institute, a privacy and information management research firm, found that data breaches showed no sign of leveling off and were increasingly costly.

“As business travelers, we’re on the road so much, we psychologically forget that we’re in public,” said Ben Knieff, head of product marketing for fraud at NICE Actimize, a company that focuses on financial crimes in the financial services industry. Mr. Knieff recalled how he was recently boarding a plane and overheard an executive speaking loudly on a cellphone as he booked a hotel, revealing all of his credit card information, including the security code.

Laptops and mobile devices have numerous vulnerabilities, starting with loss and theft. McAfee, a security technology company, also noted, in a report last month, a 46 percent increase in the amount of malware created for mobile devices from 2009 to 2010. To limit exposure of particularly sensitive information, some companies switch mobile devices when employees travel, Mr. McIndoe said. “Older versions could be more vulnerable,” he said, as criminals have had time to learn how to hack them. And criminal access to mobile networks may be easier in certain foreign countries, because of lax security and corruption.

Michael Malin, executive vice president of Mandiant, an information security company, suggested hiding mobile devices when they are unattended. “We’ve all seen maids leave hotel room doors open with service carts,” he said. Someone could easily enter the room and “infect a computer or extract sensitive data,” he said.

“We’re seeing the use of social networks to gather publicly available information on targets,” he added. Posting photographs and travel plans can jeopardize personal safety and sensitive business negotiations, experts said.

Publicly shared computers at hotels and Internet cafes “are probably the riskiest,” Mr. Knieff said. “Anyone can walk in and sit down,” he said.

Even printing boarding passes can be dangerous. “Don’t leave them in public trash cans either. Anytime you leave data about yourself in a public place, it creates opportunities,” Mr. Knieff said.

Debit card data skimming has also been rising sharply, particularly in Europe and parts of Asia, Mr. Knieff said. He recommended that travelers report their plans to their banks. When using A.T.M.’s, travelers should look for signs of tampering, and use machines only at banks, preferably in protected areas.

“I travel to Southeast Asia frequently, and you hear about how it is a hotbed for credit card fraud,” said Bryndon Bay, president of Mel Bay Publications, a music publishing company, in Pacific, Mo., who relies on his iPad and iPhone on the road. Both are locked and protected with secure passwords. “I never go to places where I have to enter frequent-flier numbers, credit card information, or any personal data,” he said, “and I always clear off history after I finish because I don’t trust who may go on after me.”

“I just feel I use common sense and it works for me,” Mr. Bay said.

Robert Hamilton, senior product marketing manager for Symantec, recommended avoiding free public Wi-Fi. “Some look like legitimate hot spots, but they are set up by criminals,” frequently at airport terminals. If using a wireless connection, he suggested entering it through a smartphone connection, which is much harder to hack. And at hotels, obtain an access key before using the wireless connection, he said, to ensure it is not “sponsored by the person in the room next door.”

Betsy Page Sigman, a professor of operations and information management at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, said travelers attending conventions should also be aware of the risks. “You want to be overly cautious, especially if you are around a lot of competitors,” she said.

Bob Austin, president of KoreLogic, an information security consultancy, said, “If I had a single piece of advice for a business traveler’s peace of mind, it is whole disk encryption,” he said. Used with a robust pass phrase, similar to a password, “everything on the hard drive is protected from disclosure.” Many organizations also require their employees to use virtual private networks, which lower the risk of interception when accessing public wireless sites. The V.P.N. sends data through an encrypted tunnel.

Tracy Armer, systems manager for the Madison Park Group, a stationery and gift company in Seattle, said sales staff members used both whole disk encryption and V.P.N.’s when traveling, but he discouraged taking laptops unless critical. “You could be on a business trip, innocently looking up a good place to eat on the Internet, but there is a financial folder open on the desktop,” he said. “Someone could potentially browse the contents of your laptop.”

He suggested reading company material on paper while traveling.

Unfortunately, he added, “even with strong precautions, nothing is ever 100 percent secure.”

Just when you thought things couldn’t get worst, we are reminded they can; after all the year is not over yet. So it seems that after a friendly pat down from our trusted TSA agents, the headaches of flying commercial doesn’t stop there. Due to the new Tarmac rule where Airliners were getting fined by keeping passengers cozy for hours on the tarmac, the airliners have decided that it’s just not worth the expense of getting you home as soon as possible. It’s actually more cost efficient to just cancel your flight and leave it up to you to find your way home. You being stranded is so cost efficient for them that the cancellation rate at the nation’s major airports surged 24 percent during the eight months after the rule went into effect. Just another example of who has your best interest at heart.

By Mary Carr Mayle

Gulfstream Aerospace test pilots and flight-test engineers recently made business-aviation history when they flew the Savannah-built Gulfstream G650 flight-test aircraft for the first time using only an electrically powered, fly-by-wire backup flight-control system.

The plane, Gulfstream’s Serial Number 6001, flew for a total of 3 hours and 33 minutes on Dec. 21.

Test pilots Jake Howard and Gary Freeman, along with flight-test engineers Bill Osborne and Nathaniel Rutland, evaluated the fly-by-wire system in electric backup actuation mode for 2 hours and 20 minutes of the flight, performing five landings with the backup system engaged.

“The system performed flawlessly,” said Pres Henne, senior vice president for programs, engineering and test at Gulfstream.

“There was no difference in handling qualities between the electrically and hydraulically powered modes.”

Said test pilot Freeman: “It flew so well that unless pilots were told they were in backup actuation mode I don’t think they would notice.”

Typically, fly-by-wire uses a third hydraulic system to provide redundancy in the event of a dual hydraulic system failure.

However, Gulfstream’s fly-by-wire architecture uses electric backup hydraulic actuators – electrically controlled actuators that are primarily hydraulically powered but offer electric power as a backup. A self-contained hydraulic reservoir and motor pump allow full operation should hydraulic loss occur.

The system provides enhanced safety and aircraft availability because of the two different power sources.

The self-contained actuators also offer an advantage following extremely rare failure scenarios, such as a rotor burst, which occurs when an engine fails, resulting in the high-energy release of rotor fragments that can damage critical systems.

The December flight tested the electric backup handling qualities on the plane’s three axes: pitch, roll and yaw. Flap settings were tested at 10,000 feet at speeds ranging from near stall to full speed, and cruise configurations were evaluated at a variety of altitudes ranging from 28,000 feet to 45,000 feet.

The pilots also initiated an emergency descent from 45,000 feet to 25,000 feet and evaluated handling qualities in the landing configuration by making multiple offset approaches at Brunswick Golden Isles Airport.

ABOUT THE G650
The new flagship in a line of Gulfstream business jets, the ultra-large-cabin, ultra-high speed G650 is designed to fly faster and farther than any traditional business aircraft. Capable of carrying eight passengers and a crew of four on nonstop legs of 7,000 nautical miles, it can link Dubai with New York and London with Buenos Aires. Equipped with powerful Rolls-Royce BR725 engines, the G650 will cover shorter distances at a speed of Mach 0.925, just shy of the speed of sound.

Not your typical article on private aviation but as fellow New Yorker I felt it was worth mentioning. When you combine a professional sports team, private aviation, and a NYC landmark in an article, you know it’s going to be an interesting read.

———————————————-

The Jets were in an Empire State of Mind Sunday night after toppling the New England Patriots.

As the team’s charter flight descended toward Newark Airport, the captain called an audible and asked the tower for permission to veer closer to the Empire State Building, which was lit up in the team’s colors.

“Well I’ve had an unusual request,” the captain said. “If it’s green and white, these guys actually want to get as close as we could to see it.”

Like an airborne offensive line, Newark’s air-traffic controllers gladly cleared a path for the plane.

JONATHAN BASKIN

“You guys are awesome,” the captain said. “And I will tell you later who said that.”

According to team sources, he was relaying a message from boisterous head coach Rex Ryan.

Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum said it was a fitting end to a perfect night. “For the Empire State Building to be lit green and white was already special,” he said. “Then for everyone involved to allow us to have a view on our way back was a great ending for our trip and something that the team will always remember.”

The route change that brought the Boeing 767 within clear view of the building required special permission to stray into La Guardia’s airspace, FAA spokesman Jim Peters said, but “no other flights were affected.”

The tower later alerted the jet as it neared the city’s tallest building.

“Taking you down the west side of the building down the Hudson,” the controller said. “Empire State Building should be at 11 o’clock.”

“It’s beautiful,” the flight captain said. “Yeah, we’ve got 200 people looking at it. A beautiful night for it, too. Really appreciate it, guys.”

Controllers then directed Continental charter flight 1915 toward Newark, where the plane landed at 10:53 p.m.

“Glad to do it,” the tower said.

Moments later, the tower said, “Clear to land for the champion New York Jets.”

Asked if they enjoyed the fly-by, the captain said, “We did, and the team did, too. It was great. I know the coach liked it.”

Such a fly-by request is not uncommon, but in this instance was particularly special for the controllers.

“It’s kind of cool,” said Ray Adams, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association at Newark. “It wasn’t a typical flight path, but it does happen,” he said.

BY LESLEY CLARK

LCLARK@MIAMIHERALD.COM

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration Friday said it will allow for more U.S. travel to Cuba, making it easier for schools, churches and cultural groups to visit the island.

A senior Obama official told The Miami Herald the much-expected move to expand cultural, religious and educational travel to Cuba is part of the administration’s continuing “effort to support the Cuban people’s desire to freely determine their own future.

President Barack Obama is also restoring the amount of money ($2,000) that can be sent to nonfamily members to the level they were at during part of the Clinton and Bush administrations. There will be a quarterly limit on the amount that any American can send: $500 per quarter to “support private economic activity.”

The administration also will restore the broader “people-to-people” category of travel, which allows “purposeful” visits to increase contacts between U.S. and Cuban citizens.

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Miami, the new chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, assailed the revision, saying they “will not help foster a pro-democracy environment in Cuba.

“These changes will not aid in ushering in respect for human rights,” Ros-Lehtinen said. “And they certainly will not help the Cuban people free themselves from the tyranny that engulfs them. These changes undermine U.S. foreign policy and security objectives and will bring economic benefits to the Cuban regime.”

But Tampa Democrat Rep. Kathy Castor hailed the news, and suggested Cuban Americans in her community would soon be able to travel directly from Tampa to Cuba if the airport secures authorization.

“The Tampa Bay region has one of the highest Cuban-American populations in this country, but for too long, families have had to travel to Miami in order to get to Cuba,” said Castor, who sent a letter to Obama before he took office, “requesting a fresh look at U.S.-Cuban relations and lifting travel restrictions for families.”

The changes could expand the number of U.S. airports from which charter flights to the island depart.

“We see these changes, in combination with the continuation of the embargo, as a way to enhance civil society in Cuba,” said the administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, adding that increased contact between Cubans and Americans could “support the independence of the Cuban people, making them less dependent on the Cuban state and on Cuban authorities.”

The official dismissed speculation that the administration delayed the changes until after the November election because Democrats in Florida feared it would hurt them among Cuban-American voters — many of whom back tough sanctions against the Cuban regime.

“This package of changes was the result of an interagency process that has concluded only in the last couple of days,” the administration official said. “They are rolling out now that they are ready to be rolled out.”

The official underscored that the changes do not lift the economic embargo and that tourist travel to Cuba remains illegal, as does sending remittances to senior government or Communist party officials.

The White House said the changes do not require congressional approval and the changes will be published in the Federal Register.

Under the changes, religious institutions in the U.S. will be able to sponsor trips to Cuba by their members with a general license.

The lounge, which will be located in the travel hub’s North terminal, will feature a travel spa, games facility and mini cinema.

“At Gatwick, we want our passengers to feel as if their holiday starts right here at the airport and not at the point at which they reach their chosen holiday destination,” Robin Longden, Gatwick Airport’s chief Commercial Officer, said.

The new No. 1 Traveller Lounge can be accessed for £20, a fee which allows passengers to relax in the facility for up to three hours. Holidaymakers and those travelling for business can also purchase treatments at the travel spa, such as massages, manicures and hairdressing.

Passengers will also be treated to complementary refreshments, food, newspapers, TV, magazines, Wi-Fi and a designated play area for young children.

In addition, the Gatwick Airport November 2010 traffic performance survey revealed that passenger numbers increased by 2.7 per cent year-on-year for the winter 2010 season’s first full month.

The iPad finally makes it to the cockpit of private aviation. Well the truth is that many pilots unofficially were already using the ipad for the many conveniences it provided. Its ability to allow pilots to use software in-flight made it more intuitive than the old method of paper charts, not to mention its ability to always be up to date with the latest info. A pilot could use radar software to avoid complications to a flight such as bad weather or have all the world maps at the touch of his finger tips. But as we all know, the Big G moves slow when it comes to adapting change and the benefits of technology. Even though the iPad has only been approved as a secondary tool for pilots to use, it is at least a step in the right direction. Many pilots already see other benefits that the iPad provides in just the time savings from the usual paper trail. I guess you can say this is one way of being greener. With technology always developing to newer devices, and the upcoming excitement of Motorola’s latest tablet Xoom, let’s hope the adaptation of technology in private aviation will be accepted more smoothly by our government.

Is anyone actually shocked by this? Last month a small child knocked a loaded magazine clip from the plane’s seat pocket while playing around during a Southwest Airline flight. Now, a man accidently brought his loaded .40 caliber gun onto an airplane in his carryon bag. Upon realizing during midflight that he forgot to check the gun he notified officials when the plane landed. Fortunately none of these incidents caused any harm but this does show how flawed the security measures are. I have always accepted the fact that in order for safety we have to subject ourselves to some inconveniences, but if the idea of safety is only a myth then how safe am I really. Ignorance may be bliss, but not when I’m flying.
